Identification requirement for new customer relationships and issuing bank cards
Nowadays, most banks and credit institutions will require you to present identification in the form of your passport when setting up new customer relationships and issuing bank cards and BankID. Below is a description of valid identification for new customer relationships, issue of bank cards with photograph and BankID.

New customer relationships
When establishing a new customer relationship, the bank will request identification. The following are accepted as valid forms of identification;
- Norwegian bank cards, including the SiO card issued by the Foundation for Student Life in Oslo.
- Valid passport (not an emergency passport) or other approved travel document, including national ID cards issued in certain EU countries.
- ID cards issued by the Norwegian Postal Service after 1 October 1994.
- Norwegian driving licences - though not the oldest type of driving licences (green).
- Nordic driving licences according to EU/EEA standard.
- Norwegian immigrant's passport (blue passport).
- Norwegian refugee travel document (green passport).

Bank card with photograph and Internet banking with BankID
Identification for the issue of bank cards with photograph and Internet banking with BankID – the following are accepted as valid identification;
- Valid Nordic passport (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland).
- Valid foreign passport from other countries with valid and approved supplementary documentation (residence and work permits).
- Valid immigrant's passport (blue passport) or Travel Document (green passport) for refugees and asylum seekers, issued on the basis of the person's national passport.

Personal identification number or D number
If you want to open an account with a Norwegian bank, you will need a Norwegian personal identification number. This also applies to foreign citizens resident in Norway for more than 6 months. Contact your local tax office to request a personal identification number – find your local tax office and learn more about personal identification numbers on the Norwegian Tax Administration's website.
Foreign citizens with temporary residence in Norway (less than 6 months) who intend to work in Norway or have some other form of direct connection with Norway can be allocated a D number. Go to the Norwegian Tax Administration's website for more information on D numbers.
